What it is actually like
The Hamakua Coast runs from Waimea toward Hilo along a shoreline of sea cliffs and stream cut gulches. Honokaʻa, Paʻauilo, and Laupahoehoe are former sugar towns that have found their footing again, and the countryside between them is some of the most productive agricultural land in the state.
This is where buyers looking for real acreage find it. Farms, orchards, and homesteads trade at prices that would not buy a condominium on the resort coast, and the rainfall means things actually grow.
The tradeoffs are honest ones: more rain, longer drives, and infrastructure that varies parcel to parcel. For the right buyer none of that is a drawback.
